So, if you’re anything like me, I live and breathe sports all year long.  In fact, I can’t get enough of seeing the Yanks pound the Sox or watching Big Blue drill the Patriots into the ground (OK, I can dream, can’t I?).  And now with the U.S. Open starting up this week, I’ll be up front and in the center of all the action on the courts – Thanks to the immersive power of 4K flat screens and the latest in surround sound technology that practically puts me and my friends right on the court with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.  There’s nothing quite like the experience of getting your heart all pumped up at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, NY – The “electricity” in the air, the passionate New York fans, fine wine, decadent cheese, fresh, sweet seafood, and the thrill of being in the company of two “gladiators” thrashing each other around the court from end to end and from side to side.  You can picture it  . . . Can’t you?  It makes you feel alive!

Now, let’s take that picture and put it right in your man cave, but on “steroids”.  We’ll completely blow your mind with a live action video wall that captures every rough and tumble point, one that integrates explosive, off-the charts, crystal clear audio (Go big or go home . . . right?)  Now all that action is bound to make you hungry.  And I’m sure you’ve worked up a thirst.  No problem . . . Your smart fridge has got you covered.  It ordered up a seafood bounty of fresh-made, ready-to-eat, succulent lobster, crab, shrimp and clams for your crew and arranged to have it delivered to the house this morning.  And it also took care of the cabernet that has that long lasting, complex cherry finish (Who says you can’t pair seafood with red wine?).

So how do you make all of this come to life?  Easy!  Just give 1 Sound Choice a call and we’ll put you in the middle of the action.

OK . . . Back in the day when I was a brand new dad, I can remember all the sleepless nights my wife and I had tending to our baby boy.  Don’t get me wrong – – I absolutely love my son and my two other boys with all my heart; I just wish I could have taken advantage of all the smart automation technology for a nursery that’s on the market today (It would have given my wife and I many more restful nights).
Young father awake at night

So what am I talking about?  “Baby Room Automation” has forever changed the way we as parents care for our baby – – day and night.  In fact, let’s put our new Baby Room Automation System to work.  What exactly can it do?  Well, for starters, it can . . .

  • Notify us if the nursery is too hot or too cold (We want to keep our baby comfortable so we can get some more shut-eye).
  • Play soothing lullabies, easing “junior” into dreamland. We retain complete control of the music by remotely turning it on and off with our smart phone or tablet.  Sweet dreams little one.
  • Watch our son from a distance. No need for us to get out of bed in the middle of the night to see if he is OK.  Just check the screen on the phone or tablet via a remote video feed from the nursery.  What a blessing that is!
  • Listen to “baby talk”. Is our baby crying or just gurgling?  Crystal clear audio monitors, professionally installed throughout the home, tell us the difference.  As it turns out, he was just gurgling and fell right back to sleep.  And so did we.

So you see, there’s really no need to spend all hours of the night with your baby.  Just put the power of “Baby Room Automation” to work for you.  And remember, we’re your One Sound Choice for putting an end to your sleepless nights once and for all.  Good night.  Sleep tight.

Lately, you have probably seen ads for 4KTV’s. 4K TV’s will be the hottest electronics gifts this holiday season but you may not really know what they are and how they differ from an HD or flat screen TV. Here is the info you need to decide if YOU need a new 4KTV to improve YOUR TV viewing experience.

First, let me explain what they are (and are not). These TVs use Ultra HD – ultra high definition (UHD) technology for a cleaner, sharper picture than any of the current HDTVs on the market (or in your livingroom).

4K TVs differ from HDTV in that they have about four times the resolution! Technically, 4K refers to the display resolution of 4096 x 2160 as compared to anything from 1024 x 768 to 1920 x 1080 for HDTV. That higher resolution delivers a sharper, more life-like image display which reviewers refer to as “stunning”.

4K TVs are similar to a Flat screen TV in that they are flat and can be hung on a wall but the picture quality is much better. If you already have a flat screen TV but are looking for a new and/or larger TV, a 4K is the next generation and for a few bucks more than the HD models, ‘future-proofing’ your system with this cutting edge technology may be worth considering.

If you have a large screen TV and have found the resolution less than impressive, you must give 4K a try. This is especially true with smaller rooms. It used to be the case that you needed more distance from the TV to get a good view. With 4K TVs you can put your nose right up to the screen and it is like looking out your window!

If you already have an HDTV and you are ready for a bigger one or if you are looking for a home theater experience in your family room, a 4K TV is the way the go.

And if you are a sports fan, this is the next best thing to being there. Unless you have seats ON the field, you can be sure that the 4K TV view from your couch will be better than the view from any seat in the stadium!

Some people spend years planning their dream home theater, measuring their room, contemplating gear specs and plotting the best time to take the plunge. Others dive right in. The owners of this northern New Jersey home barely had the front door key in their possession when they took the first step.

Ryan Herd, owner of One Sound Choice in New Jersey, said he first met the homeowners the day they settled on the house. However, it wasn’t actually a rush decision. Herd said the clients had been dreaming of a home theater for years and were waiting until they had the right house to put it in. They’d seen plenty of great examples as avid readers of Electronic House, so they knew exactly what they wanted.

There was one stipulation—it needed to be done in four weeks in time for a party. The clients were in a hurry, so if Herd was going to get the job, he had to make sure he could deliver in record time. “I have the best crew in the world,” says Herd, “we excel in project management,” so the deal was struck, and work began.

Aside from the time constraint, the clients had a few other requests. First, they’d just plunked down a lot of money into the house, so they couldn’t go overboard on esoteric gear for the theater—quality and value were the themes. Second, they wanted a stage. With a little girl in the family who likes to sing karaoke, a small stage would add to the family enjoyment. Finally, they wanted to make sure sound from the theater didn’t leak into the rest of the house. The theater room was directly below the kitchen, so the clients didn’t want a movie or sports game in the theater to drown out conversations upstairs.

To help corral the sound, while working within the owners’ budget, Herd tore down the original ceiling of the 288 square-foot room. He doubled the insulation, and used QuietRock sheetrock, plus acoustic treatments on the walls to both keep the sound inside and make it sound great when you’re there.

The sound the owners heard was going to come from a Denon AVR3312CI, a seven channel receiver with 125 Watts per channel, plus bonus features like 4K upscaling and Apple AirPlay. The receiver feeds a set of Episode ES-HT900s and ES-HT700s in-wall and in-ceiling speakers plus two ES subwoofers for a full 7.2 system. The speakers include high-performance ribbon tweeters and MDF backboxes, making them stand out from a lot of other in-wall speakers. “Huge kudos for quality,” is how Herd describes them.

To give the room a true cinema feel, and to maximize the space in the room, the front speakers were all installed behind a Stewart Directors Series acoustically perforated screen with four-way masking.

Lighting up the screen is a JVC DLA-RS40 LCoS 3D projector. With 1,300 ANSI lumens (before calibration), it’s best with a light-controlled room like this theater, but can also be viewed with some ambient light in the room. The RS40 was last year’s model, so the nearest equivalent now would be the DLA-X30 that includes almost the same specs and runs about $4,000. The projector is hidden in a soffit in the back of the room, which helps make the room look elegant and keep the projector’s fan noise from intruding on the movie.

The whole system is run by a Control4 HS300, which can be accessed either with a Control4 remote or an iPad.

The theater was completed last summer, and Herd still sees the owners from time to time as he returns to add audio or TVs to other rooms in the house. “They love it,”he says. “He (the homeowner) will tell me about the latest movie the family watched.” The official unveiling was for the daughter’s birthday party, and the client noted that guests were impressed. “I was doing demos all day. I had to wipe everyone’s chins off the floor,” Herd was told.

White House Theater | by Grant Clauser

On President’s Day it’s common to honor this nation’s leaders by staying home from school or maybe partaking in some Lincoln-inspired one-day sales.

I’m sure being president is a hard job, so he needs to unwind in the evening too. Lucky for him, the job comes with a home theater, and has for many decades. Several sources note that while the first movie was shown in the White House in 1915, the theater wasn’t actually built until 1942. President Dwight Eisenhower is said to have watched over 200 movies in the room. President Ronald Reagan’s favorite movie for the room was The Sound of Music. According to Tevi Troy, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,  President Bill Clinton was a fan of Fight Club and American Beauty.

Here’s a pictorial tour of the official White House Family Theater. You’ll notice that the décor has changed significantly over the years as technology improved and presidential tastes changed. We’re sure the theater has been guests to dignitaries of all kinds. Even Hollywood celebrities such as SteWhite House theaterven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have enjoyed the room.  The theater is used for much more than just watching Walking Dead on Sunday evenings. Some official functions take place there; guests are entertained and major speeches are rehearsed.  Maybe the family also get together to play Call of Duty.

Unfortunately we don’t know what equipment is actually installed in the theater—that’s confidential information. What’s on the president’s DVR? Does the White House have a Kaleidescape? Are they an Xbox360 or PS3 family? Extra butter on their popcorn? We do know that the While House Family Theater includes a 3D projector and that it includes seats for 42 people. Everything else is a state secret.

More service providers, retailers and utilities are getting into providing control to homes around the country. So it makes sense that part of the new offering would include energy management.

Parks Associates says that such offerings will be a big boost to the market, which will see more than $180 million in revenue by 2015. As the revenue grows, so will the number of companies willing to offer these types of services. Parks says that the end result will see 60 percent of homes with some type of networked energy management offering by 2022.

“Energy management is being bundled with home monitoring and control, security, broadband, and video services,” said Tom Kerber, director of Research, Home Controls and Energy for Parks Associates. “Next week, we will hear insights into partnership opportunities that can generate recurring revenues, reduce customer attrition, develop value-added services, and engage consumers in new ways with energy management solutions.”

Kerber is referring to the Smart Energy Summit, which is currently going on in Austin, Texas. The annual event, which focuses on new technologies, partnership opportunities, and consumer-oriented energy management solutions, runs from February 28 through March 1, 2012.

Custom iPad app gives rap mogul complete control over $850,000-per-week superyacht.

Of all the iPad apps available, rap mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has the coolest app you’ll never be able to download.

Diddy has a custom-made app that gives him and his family complete control of his new luxury yacht “Solemates.”

CNN says “Solemates” is the first yacht to have this technology. There are 14 iPads to control all on-board entertainment – including “enough flat-screen LCD panels to tile a roof – and climate settings, as well as lights and blinds. The iPad can even summon the crew to bring passengers refreshments.

There’s even an $80,000 integrated light and sound system that converts a gym into a disco dance floor – all controlled from the iPad.

“You won’t find this app for download in the Apple store any time soon,” Rupert Connor, central agent from chartering firm the Luxury Yacht Group, tells CNN. “The captain hands each guest their own iPad when they board, which they get to keep for the entirety of their trip.”

If this isn’t enough to keep passengers entertained, there also is an “inflatable floating trampoline, jet-powered surfboards, James Bond-style underwater ‘sea bobs’ and an shower that provides aromatherapy in four flavors: eucalyptus, pine needle, citrus, and peppermint.

Not too shabby, especially since CNN says the yacht costs Diddy $850,000 per week.

Delivering safety, security, medical and social solutions to seniors living independently.

We’ve hailed the coming of home health technology for several years now, but we really believe CE pros will embrace the market in 2011 and beyond. That’s when we reach a critical point in terms of the aging population, financially burdened healthcare system, and emergence of exciting technologies for seniors and their caretakers.

That’s also when many CE pros will have exhausted their growth options in traditional home systems integration.

The opportunities in the health technology sector are plentiful as are the terms you may hear to describe them: telehealth, telemedicine, telewellness, connected health, e-health, mHealth (as in mobile), aging in place, digital health and more.

They also encompass a number of technologies and markets, so it is difficult to pin down the numbers. At the very least, all of the players agree that the market – whatever you call it – is growing. Research firm InMedica predicts that the “telehealth” market will grow 55 percent (CAGR) per year in the next five years.

Of the disparate health technology sectors, CE Pro believes the best opportunity for residential integrators is to stick with their core competencies: security, home control and communications.

The bustling health tech pavilions last year at the Electronic House Expo and CEDIA Expo provided a good overview of the opportunities for integrators:

Whole-house care: Monitoring seniors via sensors, and sending alerts to loved ones and caretakers.

Communications: Establishing videoconferencing, email and telecommunications between the client and family, friends and health professionals.

Environment: Creating well-lit, appropriately cooled/heated, safe and secure, and otherwise comfortable environments for the elderly.

In the Field

Cybermation, based in Waite Park, Minn., is a typical home systems integration firm. Like many CE pros, the company thrived during the home construction boom and continues to enjoy a strong relationship with homebuilders, but that doesn’t help these days.

In his quest to find new markets for Cybermation’s mid- to high-end integration services, CEO Tom Ardolf explored commercial installations, as well as mass-market opportunities. In the end, he decided to address the aging population, and he is nowdoing that with systems from Grandcare that provide monitoring, communications and messaging for the elderly.

Deciding on a product line was the easy part for Cybermation, as it is for many integrators exploring the seniors market. The hard part is learning the industry protocol and finding customers and partners, including third-party payers.

“I spent months trying to figure out how home healthcare agencies work,” Ardolf says. “There’s a humongous government bureaucracy. It’s tricky trying to figure out who the gatekeepers are.”

The effort is paying off. Cybermation has tapped funds and grants from private and county agencies, and the company is working with a local home healthcare agency (HCA) to offer Grandcare solutions to seniors.

Currently, the HCA offers Grandcare free of charge to prospects as a way of attracting new business for its home health services. Cybermation installs the system (paid for by the various grants) for 60 to 90 days. If the client decides to keep the system, they pay only the $50/month fee for system hosting and software maintenance (through Grandcare). Otherwise, Cybermation removes the system so it can be offered to another prospect.

The outlay for the “free” install is nominal, Ardolf says. Currently, Cybermation budgets about one hour of labor for setting up a basic Grandcare system, plus 45 minutes per wireless sensor, but that estimate is extremely conservative.

Work with the one HCA has given Cybermation the confidence and the resolve to invest more heavily in the seniors market. Ardolf is calling all of the local HCAs – for profit and not-for-profit – and educating them about new and forthcoming technologies for seniors.

The word is getting out, and Cybermation has sold a few jobs. A basic system that monitors and responds to “activities for daily living,” or ADL, sells for about $3,000. A blood pressure cuff is included. From there, Cybermation can add touchscreen stations for social and medical interactions, and a host of other medical devices and environmental sensors.
